Dhaka: The attention of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has been drawn to a news item published in various print media regarding the verification of manuscripts of books to be published in the month-long Amar Ekushey Book Fair, which began in the city today. In a statement, the DMP requested all concerned to refrain from making unnecessary misinterpretation and propaganda on the issue.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the DMP emphasized that a press briefing was organized on the security measures taken by DMP on the occasion of Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2025, held on the fair premises on January 31, 2025. During the briefing, a journalist raised a question that led to the attention of Bangla Academy being drawn to the issue.

The DMP’s statement clarified that Bangla Academy was requested to exercise caution in publishing any book that could destroy communal harmony or provoke discord. The statement highlighted that this concern was echoed by many people in discussions with various stakeholders during the preparatory meeting for organizing the book fair.

Furthermore, the DMP clarified that no consultation took place, nor was any decision made regarding the vetting or approval of books by the police for future publications. The statement underscored that Bangladesh is a country of communal harmony and that the DMP always encourages creative activities like writing. The DMP welcomes an environment of open-minded practice and development.
