Dhaka: The High Court today cancelled a defamation case against BNP standing committee member and former minister Dr Khandker Mosharraf Hossain. The decision was made by a High Court bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain, following a petition presented by Dr Maruf Hossain, the lawyer representing Dr Khandker Mosharraf Hossain. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the defamation case had been put on hold by the High Court in 2017, with a rule issued at that time. Dr Maruf Hossain informed journalists that the High Court has now finally cancelled the case after dismissing the rule, effectively closing the legal proceedings against Dr Khandker Mosharraf Hossain. The defamation charge was initially framed by the Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court of Dhaka on October 27, 2014. The case was filed by One AB Siddiq, president of Janonetri Parishad, on January 20, 2013. The complaint was in response to a statement made by Dr Khandker Mosharraf Hossain at a rally in front of the National Press Club in 2012. He allegedly remarked that former prime minister Sheikh Hasina would face a fate similar to 1975 if she attempted to remain in power forcefully.
