Dhaka: A court here today exempted BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman from a case filed by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) for alleged tax evasion. Judge Rezaul Karim of Dhaka Special Judge Court-10 passed the order today as it found the allegations brought against the BNP leader "imaginary and fabricated". According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the case was initially filed by then deputy commissioner Samia Akter of Dhaka Taxes Zone-6 on July 28, 2008. The allegations were that Tarique Rahman had evaded taxes amounting to Taka 26.86 lakh. The case claimed that from 2002 to 2006, Tarique had an income of Taka 1.47 crore from various sources but failed to pay the required taxes. The dismissal of the case was a significant development for Tarique Rahman, who has been facing legal challenges over the years. The court's decision to dismiss the case based on the findings of it being "imaginary and fabricated" provides him relief from the charges that have been pending for over a decade.
