Dhaka: Md Rohan Ahmad Khan, an 18-year-old HSC examinee with aspirations of becoming a military officer, died on July 19 amidst a rising anti-discrimination movement. His death marked a significant moment in a nationwide protest that ultimately led to the ousting of the 16-year-long regime of Sheikh Hasina.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rohan’s dream of joining the Bangladesh Army was cut short when he was shot while distributing water to fellow protesters in the Kajla area of Dhaka. Despite the tragic end, his actions have been hailed as courageous and selfless, inspiring many young people to join the movement. The news of his passing plunged his community and village in Chandpur district into profound grief.
Rohan’s father, Md Sultan Khan, described the overwhelming turnout at his son’s funeral, illustrating the deep impact Rohan had on those around him. Thousands, including classmates, friends, and teachers, attended the Namaz-e-Janaza held at Baitus Salam Mosque. Rohan’s academic journey was
also notable; he had achieved high grades in science subjects despite health challenges preventing him from completing all his HSC exams.
His mother, Monira Begum, recounted Rohan’s secretive involvement in the movement. Initially unaware of his participation, she later learned from acquaintances. Despite her attempts to dissuade him, Rohan remained determined, citing the sacrifices of fellow protesters Abu Sayeed and Mir Mugdho as motivation.
On the day of his death, Rohan assisted his mother with household chores before leaving to join the protests. His mother recalled their last conversation, filled with regret over not cooking his favorite meal. Shortly after, she received the devastating news of his critical injury.
The loss of Rohan has left a lasting void in his family. His brother, Rahat Ahmad Khan, expressed how Rohan’s memory continues to haunt him. Rahat also highlighted Rohan’s commitment to helping others through his involvement with Bangladesh Scouts, which honored him posthumously.
Rohan’s
father expressed hope for his surviving son’s future, seeking government support to secure his elder son’s employment. The family continues to seek justice for Rohan’s death and the deaths of others during the protests.
Rohan’s legacy as a symbol of courage and resilience lives on, inspiring continued calls for change and justice in Bangladesh.
