Dhaka: Home Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today emphasized the need for stringent surveillance and heightened security measures at the country’s borders, underscoring that preventing smuggling is a matter of national interest that tolerates no negligence. Speaking at a meeting with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officers at their headquarters, Jahangir stressed the necessity of decisive action against smuggling activities.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Jahangir was quoted in an official release stating, “Stern action will have to be taken for defending smuggling for the cause of national interest.” The meeting was a platform for exchanging views, during which Jahangir highlighted the improved performance of the BGB, noting that the public is satisfied with the border security force’s current operations compared to previous years.
Jahangir further instructed the BGB personnel to adhere strictly to the law and their operational mandate. He emphasized the importance of maintainin
g the chain of command and following the lawful orders of senior officers. He encouraged the border security force to approach their duties with renewed vigor and to foster good relations with the local populace.
In a briefing with the press, the adviser addressed the potential need for a commission to investigate the BDR killings, stating, “We must re-investigate the incident and it will be quickly.” He acknowledged that while the law and order situation is improving, achieving full stability will require more time.
The meeting was attended by BGB Director General Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui and other officials.
