Rangpur: Vice-chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali announced that 71 students have been subjected to disciplinary action in connection with the murder of martyr Abu Sayeed.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the vice-chancellor addressed the media following the university’s 109th syndicate meeting held at the administrative building.

The vice-chancellor stated that punitive measures were enacted against 71 students involved in opposing and attacking the July Revolution student movement, based on the disciplinary committee’s recommendations. Of these, legal action has been initiated against 15 students whose studentship has concluded, while 33 have been expelled for two semesters, and 23 for one semester.

Additionally, nine teachers, officials, and employees linked to the incident, including the former proctor who was arrested by the police, have been suspended. Further actions will adhere to the Government Servants Discipline and Appeal Rules 2018, as they did not respond to the show cause letter.

The vice-chancellor also revealed plans for organizing the Begum Rokeya University Central Students’ Union (BRUCSU) elections before any other university elections. However, elections for teachers-officers-employees’ associations or unions remain suspended until further notice, following consultations with leaders from these organizations.

The syndicate meeting also approved the constitution for BRUCSU elections. A roadmap for these elections and different hall union elections will be announced after discussions with various stakeholders, including students. The administration is committed to maintaining a peaceful campus environment at martyr Abu Sayeed’s University, with student politics currently suspended as per a previous syndicate decision.
