Dhaka: “I, Major Ziaur Rahman,… do hereby declare the independence of Bangladesh,” this was the definitive announcement made by then Major Ziaur Rahman during a critical period in Bangladesh’s history. The Pakistan occupation forces had launched a brutal genocide on unarmed Bangladeshi citizens, leaving the nation in disarray and terror.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Ziaur Rahman’s declaration of independence first took place with his own Battalion after midnight on March 25 and then through Kalurghat Radio Station on March 27, 1971, in Chattogram. This announcement was pivotal, galvanizing the people to join the resistance against the Pakistani military crackdown, and clarifying that Bangladesh was an independent state. The declaration boosted morale and transformed a scattered resistance into a coordinated armed struggle.

Ziaur Rahman had long been a freedom-loving individual whose patriotism was evident from his school days. He held a deep-seated dream to challenge the existence of Pakistanis, transforming this dream into reality by declaring independence and leading the 8th Battalion of the then East Bengal Regiment. His actions during the Liberation War and his lifelong dedication to Bangladesh’s sovereignty earned him the status of a true patriot.

Throughout his career, Ziaur Rahman demonstrated his commitment to Bangladesh. While serving in the Pakistan army, he stood up for his fellow Bangladeshis during a confrontation in Abbottabad in 1954, defending the honor of Bangladesh’s national leaders. This incident foreshadowed his future role as a courageous leader.

Following the Liberation War, Ziaur Rahman played a crucial role in stabilizing Bangladesh during a period of political and military turmoil. On November 7, 1975, he emerged as a unifying leader, restoring order and saving national sovereignty, ultimately becoming Bangladesh’s legitimate president. His leadership was instrumental in transforming Bangladesh into a multiparty democracy and reviving the economy through agriculture, garment industry, and foreign remittances.

Ziaur Rahman’s governance saw significant developments in agriculture, industry, and diplomatic relations. He fostered Bangladesh’s self-sufficiency in food production, reopened and established industries, and strengthened ties with foreign nations. His vision extended to empowering youth and women, promoting Bangladeshi nationalism, and establishing Bangladesh’s presence on the international stage.

Ziaur Rahman’s legacy as a savior during national crises and a nation builder is remembered and celebrated. His contributions to Bangladesh’s independence and development have earned him the titles of a true patriot and a visionary leader who “saved the country time and again.”
