Dhaka: Land Adviser Ali Imam Majumdar today urged landowners to regularly and voluntarily pay land development tax, emphasizing its importance as a major and reliable revenue source for the state. ‘Through this tax, the government gets the opportunity to ensure regular and stable financing for various development activities at both local and national levels,’ he stated.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Majumdar was addressing a workshop on ‘Determining measures for collection of land development tax’ held at the conference room of Bhumi Bhaban in the capital. The event featured Senior Secretary of Land Ministry ASM Saleh Ahmed, Land Appeal Board Chairman Mohammad Yusuf, and Land Record and Survey Department Director General Dr. Md Mahmud Hasan as special guests. Land Reforms Board Chairman AJM Salahuddin Nagari presented the keynote paper.
Majumdar highlighted that the revenue from land development tax is allocated for multiple public welfare activities, including road and transport development, education, healthcare, irrigation systems, and rural infrastructure. He emphasized that taxes paid by citizens ultimately benefit the public through these welfare initiatives.
He further noted that proper collection of land development tax is crucial for strengthening the national economy and plays a significant role in executing development plans. The adviser mentioned that with digital land services being implemented, the rate of tax payment has been steadily increasing each year. Despite initial technical issues, it is now possible to pay land development tax entirely online, which has reduced harassment and increased public interest and awareness regarding tax payment.
Majumdar also pointed out that negligence by institutions in paying their respective taxes negatively impacts state revenue and sends a detrimental message to society.
