Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared that Russia has failed to ‘break’ the spirit of Ukrainians or secure a victory as the conflict reaches its fifth year. The full-scale invasion by Moscow, which began four years ago, has led to significant casualties and altered Europe’s security environment.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s resilience in defending its independence against the ongoing assaults from Russia’s superior military forces, which continue to control about 20% of Ukraine’s territory. He affirmed that Ukraine’s sovereignty remains intact and that Russia has not achieved its primary objectives.

The anniversary was marked by substantial international backing, with numerous senior European leaders visiting Kyiv in a show of support. The conflict has significantly impacted civilians, with ongoing airstrikes leading to the destruction of homes and disruptions in essential services like electricity and water.

Despite diplomatic efforts spearheaded by the United States, negotiations over the Donbas region’s future and Ukraine’s demand for long-term security assurances remain at a standstill. Zelenskyy extended an invitation to US President Donald Trump to visit Ukraine to witness firsthand the war’s human toll.

Western officials note that Russia is relying on a drawn-out conflict to weaken Ukraine’s resolve and international support. Nevertheless, European leaders cautioned that the war poses a risk to broader regional stability and emphasized the importance of maintaining unified support for Ukraine.

As the war progresses into its fifth year, both Russia and Ukraine are experiencing significant troop losses and increasing dependence on drone warfare. The estimated cost for Ukraine’s long-term reconstruction over the next decade stands at approximately $588 billion.
