Bogura: By-elections to the parliamentary constituencies of Bogura-6 and Sherpur-3 are expected to take place on April 9. The Election Commission (EC) is currently considering this date, as confirmed by an EC official on Tuesday. An announcement regarding the schedule for these by-polls is anticipated soon.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Election Commissioner Rahmanel Masud previously stated that the Election Commission aims to conduct these by-elections by April 14. The urgency is due to the anticipated start of the rainy season and storms following Pahela Baishakh, which could complicate the electoral process. Commissioner Masud also confirmed that postal voting will be available for these elections.

The need for by-elections in Bogura-6 arose after BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, who won the February 12 general election from both Bogura-6 and Dhaka-17, chose to retain his seat in Dhaka-17, leaving Bogura-6 open for a by-election. Meanwhile, the election in Sherpur-3 was nullified following the death of Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Nuruzzaman Badal, which prompted the need for a by-election there as well.

The general elections for 299 out of 300 constituencies were conducted on February 12, with the exception of Sherpur-3. The Election Commission published the results for 297 elected MPs on the same day, withholding results for Chattogram-2 and 4 due to pending court decisions. Additionally, 296 newly elected MPs were sworn in, including a significant number from various parties, with BNP holding the majority.
