Dhaka: Noting that elections are entirely Bangladesh’s internal matter, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam today stated that the wounds caused by the crimes against humanity perpetrated by the Awami League remain fresh. “The wounds caused by the crimes against humanity perpetrated by this party are still fresh,” he commented in response to India’s remarks on the ban of Awami League activities.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Alam expressed that the Awami League has significantly harmed the nation’s democratic structure, restricted political freedom, and compromised sovereignty during its 15-year-rule. He emphasized that the ban on the party’s activities is essential to protect national security and sovereignty, ensure the safety of July Movement activists, and safeguard plaintiffs and witnesses of the International Crimes Tribunal.
Alam further recalled the Awami League’s history of conducting elections that damaged the electoral processes and institutions. The interim government is currently focused on a reform process to rebuild the country’s democratic system.
“Elections are entirely our internal matter. We urge all to respect the sovereign will of our people in matters relating to elections,” Alam concluded.
