Dhaka: World leaders, foreign governments, and international organizations today condoled the death of former Bangladesh Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, paying tribute to her political legacy and expressing solidarity with Bangladesh.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the United States expressed condolences, acknowledging her role in shaping Bangladesh’s modern history. In a condolence message, the United States Embassy in Bangladesh noted her political legacy, stating that she played a pivotal role in shaping her country’s modern history and her leadership was instrumental in advancing Bangladesh’s development.
Similarly, Russia expressed condolences over the death of Begum Khaleda Zia, recalling her role in maintaining cordial bilateral relations. The Embassy of Russia in Bangladesh remembered her with gratitude for the relations maintained during her tenures.
China mourned the passing of the late leader and reaffirmed its ties with Bangladesh and the BNP. The Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh expressed deep gratitude and respect, committing to continued friendly relations under the BNP’s current leadership.
India also expressed sorrow over her death. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted her contributions as the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh and recalled his warm meeting with her in 2015, hoping her vision would guide future partnerships.
Pakistan’s leadership shared their grief, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari both extending condolences, acknowledging her service to Bangladesh and her friendship with Pakistan.
The United Kingdom expressed deep sadness, with the British High Commission in Bangladesh extending condolences to her family and the people of Bangladesh.
Japan recalled her role in strengthening bilateral relations. The Japanese Ambassador remembered her visits to Japan and her contributions to the friendship between the two nations.
Germany honored her political legacy and long public service, recalling significant engagements and her role in shaping Bangladesh’s political landscape.
France highlighted her national contribution, expressing condolences and acknowledging her role in shaping Bangladesh’s national life.
Australia, the European Union, and the United Nations also extended condolences, with the UN reaffirming its solidarity with the government and people of Bangladesh.
The regional body BIMSTEC joined in expressing condolences, wishing her soul eternal peace.
