Dhaka: Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter has announced that water bodies will be leased exclusively to fishermen, preventing others from acquiring these leases. She made this declaration while serving as the chief guest at a function celebrating National Fisheries Week 2025, organized by the Department of Fisheries at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the adviser emphasized that the destruction of natural fishing grounds would result in joblessness for fishermen. She noted that current fish production levels have fallen short of expectations, depriving those who rely on fishing for their livelihood. As a result, the government has resolved not to lease water bodies to individuals outside the fishing profession. Permission has been secured from the Land Ministry to address the issue of water body leases.

Farida Akhter praised the efforts of young scientists at the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI), highlighting their research as a source of inspiration. She stressed the importance of applying research findings in practical settings. Additionally, she expressed the government’s commitment to ensuring that Hilsa fish, a local delicacy, remains affordable in the market.

During the event, Dr. Abdur Rouf, Director General of the Department of Fisheries, mentioned that Hilsa production is heavily dependent on natural conditions. He pointed out that obstacles prevent Hilsa from migrating from the sea to rivers, leading to a decline in harvesting. He also revealed plans to establish specific zones for increased shrimp farming.

The event was also attended by Dr. Abu Sufian, Director General of the Department of Livestock Services, and Dr. Anuradha Bhadra, Director General of the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute, among others.
