Dhaka: A court here today placed two leaders of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on one-day remand each in a case lodged over the alleged attempt to murder a Dhaka University (DU) student during the anti-discrimination students movement on July 15.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the remanded accused are BCL central joint general secretary and its Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Huq Hall unit president Kamal Uddin Rana, and Surja Sen Hall unit organizing secretary Abdullah Khan Shoishab. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Farzana Haque passed the order as police produced the duo before the court, pleading for a 10-day remand each.

The two were arrested in separate operations in the capital last night. Police sources reported that a procession of DU students supporting the anti-discrimination students movement commenced in front of the Raju sculpture on the campus on the afternoon of July 15, 2024.

During the protest, leaders and activists from various affiliated organizations of the Awami League (AL), including the banned BCL, allegedly attacked the students with local and foreign-made weapons, resulting in serious injuries to 300 students.

DU student Arman Hossain, who sustained injuries in the attack, filed the case on October 28 against 220 individuals, including BCL president Saddam Hossain.
