Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed announced today that the party’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, is expected to return to Bangladesh soon once a conducive atmosphere is established.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Salahuddin mentioned that the current environment is not yet suitable for Rahman’s return, but efforts are underway to create the necessary conditions. He emphasized that while it may take a few more days, Rahman’s return is imminent. Salahuddin made these statements at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka after concluding a two-week visit to the United Kingdom.
During his address, Salahuddin urged the interim government to declare a specific election roadmap, highlighting the importance of conducting elections based on national unity for a democratic transition. He also addressed questions regarding the initiative by leaders of the July movement to form a new political party, welcoming the political platform but stressing that any new party must adhere to fair political practices and not seek preferential treatment from the government.
Salahuddin also responded to the demands of the July movement leaders to abolish the 1972 constitution, asserting that while a constitution is fundamental to a country, it may be amended or ratified but not discarded. When questioned about his discussions with Tarique Rahman, Salahuddin stated that details would be revealed gradually, noting that Rahman emphasized the importance of unity within the party. Salahuddin’s visit to London was in response to a call from Tarique Rahman, who is currently in the United Kingdom.
