Dhaka:State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku on Tuesday emphasized the need to boost fish production and enhance the fisheries sector to preserve the traditional Bengali identity known as 'Mache-Bhate Bangali'.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Tuku highlighted Bangladesh's significant progress in fish production but stressed the importance of strengthening its global position. He was speaking at a fish fry release program and discussion meeting held at the University of Dhaka, organized by the Department of Fisheries.
Tuku pointed out the economic potential of the fisheries sector, noting its capacity to generate extensive employment opportunities and its substantial contribution to the national economy. He recalled that former President Ziaur Rahman had recognized this potential and initiated developments through canal excavation and promotion of fish farming.
The minister also mentioned that former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia introduced National Fisheries Fortnight, and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has continued efforts in canal excavation to boost fish production. He noted the challenges posed by reduced navigability of many rivers and mentioned ongoing initiatives to restore navigability and reduce pollution.
Emphasizing the importance of expanding deep-sea fishing, Tuku stated it could significantly boost the national economy. He addressed students from the University of Dhaka's Department of Fisheries, encouraging them to pursue careers in the sector due to its increasing global significance.
Tuku called for a modernized and effective approach to fisheries education, focusing on conservation and sustainable development of aquatic resources. The program was chaired by Professor Wahida Haque, head of the University's Department of Fisheries. Earlier in the day, Tuku participated in releasing fish fry into a pond at Curzon Hall on the university campus.
