Dhaka: Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Monday declared that individuals who executed armed assaults against civilians during the July Uprising, including members of the Awami terrorist group, Jubo League, and Chhatra League, are to be considered criminals.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Ahmed made these remarks while addressing a supplementary question from BNP MP Zainul Abdin Farooq in the Parliament. He emphasized that cases have been filed against the perpetrators and assured that all cases will undergo proper investigation, with the judiciary responsible for delivering justice.
In response to another query from BNP MP Abul Kalam Azad Siddiqui, Ahmed explained that during the Awami League’s governance from 2009 to 2024, various injustices, including disappearances, false political cases, murders, and kidnappings, were reportedly carried out by some police force members under the orders of what he described as a fascist government. He noted that certain cases were withdrawn during the interim government’s tenure.
Ahmed further mentioned that upon assuming office, the current government took steps to withdraw numerous false cases filed against individuals from various social and political backgrounds, including government and opposition party members, political activists, and journalists, after thorough scrutiny.
The Home Minister also outlined the government’s commitment to protecting those involved in the July Uprising through a new ordinance. He stated that the BNP government, upon taking office, established district-level committees led by District Magistrates to review politically motivated cases filed from 2009 to 2024. These committees are tasked with selecting cases for withdrawal and forwarding them to the ministry for further action under CrPC 494, based on recommendations from a committee led by the Law Minister.
