Dhaka:Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal emphasized the importance of merit, integrity, discipline, and human values for students, stating that education alone is insufficient to foster responsibility towards the country. He shared these remarks as the chief guest at the 'Freshers' Reception 2026' organized by the Department of Zoology at Dhaka University.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Kamal encouraged students to not only aim for academic success and career achievements but also to prioritize their duties to the nation. He urged them to uphold the esteemed reputation of Dhaka University globally, reminding them that the institution was established for talented individuals.
Reflecting on his own student days, Kamal, a former student of the Department of History during the 1989-90 academic year, shared his nostalgia upon returning to the university's auditorium. He highlighted Dhaka University's significant contributions to the country's democratic movements, secularism, and national liberation, citing its role in the Language Movement of 1952, the Liberation War of 1971, the mass uprising of 1990, and the anti-fascist movement of 2024.
Kamal stressed the necessity of regular class attendance and the cultivation of perseverance and discipline, asserting that true merit is developed through hard work, honesty, and discipline. He encouraged students to practice tolerance, mutual respect, free thinking, and human values throughout their university life.
He also urged students to contribute to the nation's progress rather than solely pursuing government jobs, advocating for a shift towards a merit-based system. Kamal called for collective efforts to build a 'new Bangladesh' and prevent the resurgence of fascism.
The event was attended by teachers of the Department of Zoology, new and senior students, invited guests, officials of the Parliament Secretariat, and media representatives.
