Dhaka: A special court in Dhaka today released BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s former private secretary, Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Opu, from charges in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act. Judge Mohammad Abdul Halim of the Dhaka Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal issued the order, granting a plea from the defense.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the case had reached the stage of witness deposition. The court’s decision to exempt all accused parties, including Opu, closes the deposition phase. Defense counsel Masud Ahmed Talukder stated that the case was fabricated and the recent order proved this claim.

The other individuals accused in the case were Atikur Rahman Atik, Mahmudul Hasan Ferdous, his nephew AM Ali Haider Nafiz, Joynal Abedin, Alamgir Hossain, and Faizur Rahman. The case stemmed from an incident on December 24, 2018, when the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) conducted a raid in the Motijheel area of the city. During the operation, a substantial amount of money was discovered, leading to
accusations that the funds were intended to influence the elections at that time.
