Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today said if BNP is voted to power, it will ensure the people’s empowerment and partnership in the politics. ‘During Sheikh Hasina’s fascist regime, we saw politics of so-called development, which was based on corruption, misrule and criminalization,’ he said.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Tarique Rahman made these remarks while virtually addressing a discussion titled ‘An outline for reformation of state structure: reforms in light of the 31 points’ at a city hotel with BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in the chair. He emphasized that BNP’s governance will focus on the rule of law, human rights, and freedom of speech, contrasting it with the current regime.
Rahman highlighted the need for a rules-based state structure that would attract private investments globally, which would work in tandem with the public sector to boost the country’s production and development. He stressed that if BNP assumes power, i
t will restore freedom of expression for every citizen, reminiscent of the period two decades ago when the media could freely criticize the government.
The BNP acting chairman also criticized the last 16 years of governance, pointing out issues such as extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and politically motivated cases. He pledged that if BNP is elected, the party will strive to eliminate these issues and uphold human rights as per the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Rahman spoke of BNP’s commitment to stand by the people during crises, as seen during the recent floods, and mentioned efforts to provide support to families affected by violence during uprisings. He asserted BNP’s policy of ensuring equal rights and security for every citizen, emphasizing that the state belongs to everyone, regardless of religion, party, or opinion.
Tarique Rahman articulated that the party’s 31-point framework aims to redefine socio-economic development in Bangladesh, drawing from the legacies of Shahe
ed President Ziaur Rahman, Begum Khaleda Zia, and previous BNP policies. This comprehensive plan can be adapted based on public and stakeholder opinions to meet the country’s evolving needs.
He concluded by stressing the importance of inclusive, liberal, and democratic governance, urging for a truly democratic Bangladesh that respects the sacrifices made by pro-democratic forces and restores voting rights to the people.
