Dhaka: Bangladesh left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam claimed his maiden ODI wicket by dismissing Kusal Mendis during the opening match of the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. Along with Parvez Hossain Emon, Tanvir made his ODI debut, becoming the 151st and 152nd players respectively to represent Bangladesh in this format.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Bangladesh had gained the upper hand before Tanvir was introduced into the attack. The pacers, led by Taskin Ahmed, quickly dismantled Sri Lanka’s top order, setting the stage for Tanvir’s entry. Despite the early setbacks, Kusal Mendis and captain Charith Asalanka began to rebuild Sri Lanka’s innings with a mix of caution and aggression.
Kusal Mendis appeared comfortable at the crease, effortlessly executing his shots, which momentarily disrupted the Bangladeshi bowlers’ rhythm. However, Tanvir’s strategic bowling brought a crucial breakthrough when it seemed that Sri Lanka was gaining momentum. Tanvir delivered a well-maintained line and length, bowling a slider that deceived Kusal, who misjudged the turn and was trapped leg-before.
The on-field umpire initially ruled in favor of Tanvir’s appeal, and despite Kusal’s decision to review, the verdict was upheld. Kusal Mendis departed after scoring 45 runs off 43 balls, including six fours and one six, marking a significant moment in Tanvir’s budding ODI career.
