Sunamganj: Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter announced that the government plans to develop Tanguar Haor into a tourism center while implementing measures to protect its biodiversity and fish population. She made these remarks during a view-exchange meeting aimed at discussing strategies for safeguarding the fisheries resources of Sunamganj district, held at the district’s Circuit House last night.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Adviser Farida emphasized the importance of conducting regular and extensive operations against the use and trade of illegal fishing nets. She expressed confidence that these efforts would lead to a reduction in illegal fishing practices and a corresponding increase in fish production. To further support native fish species, the government has initiated the establishment of sanctuaries.
Highlighting the need for coordinated efforts, Farida noted that removing silt from the haor and declaring a ban period, along with the creation of sanctuaries, could significantly boost fish production. She called for inter-ministerial coordination involving the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Ministry of Land, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Water Resources, and Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change to devise effective solutions.
The meeting was attended by Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Shahina Ferdousi, Deputy Commissioner of Sunamganj Dr. Mohammad Ilias Mia, Superintendent of Police Tofail Ahmed, and other relevant officials.
