Rajshahi: A month-long campaign to remove spikes, locally known as perek, from trees has been launched with the aim of establishing an eco-friendly atmosphere by protecting trees in the district. Additional Deputy Commissioner Tuktuk Talukder inaugurated the campaign at the Collectorate building premises.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event witnessed the presence of Divisional Forest Officer Rafiquzzaman Shah, Associate Professor Dr. Montaj Ali Sarker from the Department of Botany at Rajshahi University, and BRAC Bank Manager Dulal Mian, among others. Dr. Montaj Ali explained that trees play a crucial role in supplying oxygen and absorbing carbon dioxide from the environment. However, due to a lack of awareness, people often insert spikes into trees, overlooking their benefits.
Dr. Montaj Ali emphasized that the involvement of both government and non-government organizations, alongside students, is not enough to eradicate the practice of inserting spikes into trees. He highlighted the importance of concerted efforts to ensure the success of the campaign. In addition to the campaign, raising public awareness about the significance of tree protection is deemed essential.
