Dhaka: BNP's Legal Affairs Secretary Barrister Kayser Kamal today stated that the apex court's judgment, which upheld the acquittal of all individuals convicted in two cases related to the August 21, 2004 grenade attack, demonstrates the innocence of BNP's acting chairman, Tarique Rahman.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Kamal accused Sheikh Hasina of implicating Tarique Rahman in the case out of personal vengeance. He expressed this view while addressing the press following the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court's judgment.
Kamal further argued that Sheikh Hasina never genuinely pursued justice in the August 21 grenade attack cases. He suggested that if justice had been her true motive for the attack and the killing of Ivy Rahman, she would have refrained from involving Tarique Rahman in the case purely for political reasons.
Earlier in the day, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld a High Court verdict that acquitted all those convicted by a lower court in the two cases associated with the grenade attack on an Awami League rally on Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital.
A six-member Appellate Division bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, delivered the judgment unanimously, dismissing the state's appeal against the High Court verdict and providing related observations.
