Dhaka: The newly appointed Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali, officially assumed his duties from his predecessor, Md Mainul Hasan, today. The transition of leadership took place at the DMP headquarters, marking the beginning of Ali’s two-year tenure as the head of one of the country’s most significant law enforcement agencies.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the government announced Sajjat Ali’s appointment as the DMP Commissioner on Wednesday. The formal handover ceremony was marked by the presence of the outgoing commissioner, Md Mainul Hasan, who, along with his colleagues, extended a warm welcome to Ali. A contingent of police officers honored Ali with a guard of honour upon his arrival at the headquarters, reflecting the ceremonial significance of the event.
Sajjat Ali’s career in the police service began on January 21, 1986, as a cadet of the 6th batch of Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS), known as the 84 batch. Throughout his extensive police career, he has
held various key positions. His roles included serving as an Additional Superintendent of Police (Adl.SP) at Jhenaidah, the Police headquarters, and the Special Branch (SB). He also held the position of Superintendent of Police (SP) in the districts of Luxmipur, Narail, and Bagerhat, as well as in the DMP.
In addition to his service in these districts, Ali was the commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) and served as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) at the police headquarters in Dhaka, Chottogram range, and Highway Police. His experience and leadership were further recognized when he was appointed as an Additional Inspector General of Police (IGP) at the police headquarters, before being sent on forced retirement by the government on November 3, 2016.
Moreover, Sajjat Ali was appointed as a member of the newly established Police Reforms Commission, reflecting his continued influence and expertise in the field. His career also includes participation in numerous United Nations peacekeeping missions and
various training programs, both domestically and internationally.
