Rangpur: Calling the Right to Information (RTI) Act an effective tool to ensure people’s rights, speakers at a discussion have said that the RTI Act has paved the way for citizens to get information. They expressed the view in a discussion held at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room in the city on Sunday afternoon to mark the day.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Rangpur district administration and TIB’s Rangpur unit jointly organized the programme in observance of International Right to Information Day 2025, with the theme ‘Ensuring Access to Environmental Information in the Digital Age’. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rabiul Faisal presided over the event.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Ramiz Alam and Area Coordinator of Rangpur TIB Md Alamgir Kabir delivered speeches at the discussion. The Deputy Commissioner emphasized that people are the enforcers of the Right to Information Act, which has paved the way for them to easily access information as their right.
He stated that the free supply of information plays an effective role in ensuring transparency and accountability, as well as establishing good governance. However, he noted that despite the Act being in force for a long time, full implementation has not been achieved due to a lack of awareness.
The Deputy Commissioner urged all concerned to widely publicize the Right to Information Act. In the open discussion, participants expressed their opinions on uploading updated information on the website of each institution, reducing the time limit for obtaining information, and increasing publicity on the RTI Act.
Government officials, civil society representatives, journalists, teachers, and students were present at the event.
