Dhaka: Noting that the image of Bangladesh abroad is very good, Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed today urged stakeholders to remain vigilant to ensure that the country continues to progress without facing any setbacks. Addressing the 'Inauguration of Academic Programmes of ERF Institute' and a seminar on 'Financial Transparency in Corporate Sector' at the ERF Auditorium in the capital, Dr. Ahmed emphasized the recognition Bangladesh receives from development partners, including multilateral organizations.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Ahmed, who is also the former central bank governor, discussed the dual nature of the interim government, highlighting its positive aspects in enhancing Bangladesh's international image. He called for heightened vigilance to prevent any barriers that might impede the nation's forward momentum.
Dr. Ahmed advocated for stronger auditing practices, greater transparency, and improved practical training for journalists and investigators to safeguard the country's economic interests and build public trust. He criticized what he described as "clever maneuvers" by certain actors who divert and siphon funds abroad, underscoring the need for robust oversight by Bangladesh Bank and other regulatory bodies.
He further urged specialized social auditors and investigative teams to adopt rigorous, evidence-based methods and to look beyond traditional accounting practices to follow financial trails accurately. In his remarks, Dr. Ahmed emphasized the importance of constructive media coverage, urging journalists to present verified facts and avoid narratives that could weaken the government or empower negative elements.
Dr. Ahmed also highlighted the significance of investigative journalism for accountability, recommending short, practical training programs that focus on verification and analytical methods. He argued that journalism education should prioritize hands-on reporting and credible storytelling that connects numbers to their sources, using agriculture as an example of effective field reporting.
Finance Secretary Dr. Md Khairuzzaman Mozumder praised the role of economists and financial analysts in shaping pragmatic fiscal policies. He acknowledged their contributions during the preparation of the national budget and emphasized the value of expert opinions in influencing key policy decisions. Dr. Mozumder expressed optimism about further enriching Bangladesh's economic governance through closer engagement with economic experts.
The event, presided over by ERF President Doulot Akter Mala and moderated by its General Secretary Abul Kashem, also featured remarks from FRC Chairman Dr. Md Sajjad Hossain Bhuiyan and ICAB President NKA Mobin as guests of honor.
