Dhaka: Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today stressed the need for a unified commitment across all sectors to achieve a just transition in Bangladesh. Rizwana highlighted the risk of greenwashing due to the lack of a clear definition and criteria for sustainability.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rizwana emphasized the importance of evolving standards as Bangladesh prepares to graduate from the least developed country (LDC) category. She noted that a just transition should extend beyond the energy sector to include textiles, agriculture, and manufacturing, ensuring the entire country progresses cohesively.
Rizwana addressed the fragmented approach to sustainability, particularly in the private sector, which often operates under international pressure. She called for a collective agreement on sustainability standards and rejected superficial technological fixes, citing the example of the burnt brick industry and its impact on air, soil, and labor.
She criticized the tendency to bypass environmental challenges and stressed the need for structural change. Rizwana urged academic institutions to guide national efforts and called on public agencies to embed environmental values in their core functions.
Rizwana underscored the importance of a unified commitment to sustainability across all government bodies, including local government, transport, and energy. She pointed out the inadequacy of green certification if it overlooks key aspects like gender sensitivity and energy efficiency.
Reflecting on broader issues, Rizwana urged a shift in mindset regarding development and environmental protection, advocating for sustainable practices that go beyond isolated projects. She expressed hope for a collaborative effort among international organizations, government, private sector, and civil society to shape national policies.
The environment adviser reaffirmed her support from the Department of Environment, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and the Ministry of Water Resources, in advancing a sustainable transition for Bangladesh.
