Sylhet: Disaster Management and Relief and Liberation War Affairs Adviser Faruk-E-Azam, Bir Protik, today emphasized that the upcoming referendum is designed to transfer ownership of the state and government back to the people. He highlighted the critical nature of the referendum’s outcome, which will significantly influence the future trajectory of Bangladesh, urging citizens to actively participate to effect meaningful change.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Faruk-E-Azam made these remarks at a courtyard meeting organized by the District Information Office at the Lakkatura Golf Club ground. The event, held this afternoon, focused on the referendum and the forthcoming national parliament election. Health and Family Welfare Adviser Nurjahan Begum attended as a special guest.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Faruk-E-Azam outlined the interim government’s three primary responsibilities following the 2024 mass uprising: prosecuting genocide perpetrators, implementing fundamental state system reforms, and conducting the national parliament election. He noted that trials have commenced, with several perpetrators already punished, and stressed that the July Charter was established to prevent a return to a previous fascist regime, emerging from consensus among political parties.
The adviser pointed out that the referendum addresses fundamental issues within the July Charter, and organizing the national election will signify the culmination of the interim government’s duties. He identified first-time voters as particularly fortunate, as they have the opportunity to vote for essential state reforms and the safeguarding of basic rights. A favorable verdict for the referendum, he added, would aid in reforming the economy, judiciary, health, and education sectors.
Faruk-E-Azam called for collective efforts to build a prosperous, humane, and inclusive new Bangladesh, fulfilling the aspirations for which numerous students and citizens sacrificed their lives.
Health Adviser Nurjahan Begum, in her speech, remarked that no government could alter the people’s destiny without their awareness of their rights. She emphasized the importance of electing capable candidates through informed decision-making and noted that a robust state structure yields competent candidates. She reiterated that voting for the referendum is essential to reform and fortify the state system, aiming to construct a discrimination-free nation.
The meeting was presided over by Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Khan Md Reza-un-Nabi. Other notable attendees included Md Saidur Rahman, Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Mir Md Aslam Uddin, Director of the Department of Mass Communication, Deputy Commissioner Md Sarwar Alam, and Civil Surgeon Md Nasir Uddin.
