Dhaka: The eleventh edition of the international photo exhibition 'Chobi Mela' has commenced at various venues in Bangladesh. The event is organized by Drik Photo Gallery and Pathshala, with support from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the chief adviser of the event, renowned Bangladeshi photographer Shahidul Alam, emphasized that the exhibition represents more than just a festival; it is a form of resistance and a movement. Alam expressed that after the challenging period following the ouster of a dictator, there is hope for a different Bangladesh. He urged artists, journalists, and intellectuals to consistently question the actions of the powerful elite.
Mostofa Sarwar Farooki highlighted the significance of Chhobi Mela as a notable international art event in Bangladesh. Reflecting on the country's photographic art and culture, Farooki acknowledged past challenges in recognizing photography as an art form. He noted efforts by the interim government to advance the situation, including the establishment of a dedicated Department for Photography at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
Shilpakala Academy director general Rezauddin Stalin expressed gratitude and a commitment to fostering art and culture. The exhibition is being held at multiple locations in Dhaka, including Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Drik Path Gallery, Bangladesh National Museum, National Parliament premises, and Alias Farcies.
The art exhibition showcases pictures of struggle and stories from various walks of life. The festival will be open to the public until January 31.
