Dhaka: Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhtar today stated that actual fishermen do not engage in the illegal practice of catching 'jatka' fish. She made this assertion while addressing a view-exchanging meeting at a fish market in Jatrabari in the capital, where she served as the chief guest to mark Jatka Conservation Week-2025.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the adviser criticized those who catch jatka, labeling them as evil businessmen. She emphasized the importance of distinguishing between genuine fishermen and those who exploit the practice for profit. Farida Akhtar also announced plans for developing a healthy market in a complex building in Jatrabari, ensuring that all facilities are kept separate to maintain a regulated environment.
The adviser further addressed the issue of insecurity faced by fish traders, including shopkeepers, within the market. She assured the attendees that discussions with the home ministry would be conducted to resolve these security concerns. Additionally, she urged all stakeholders not to inflate fish prices unnecessarily, advocating for fair trade practices within the industry.
The meeting was presided over by Director General of the Department of Fisheries, Dr. Md Abdur Rouf, while the welcome speech was delivered by Deputy Director of Dhaka Division, Md Monirul Islam.
