Sundarganj: The re-excavation work of the Gandar canal under Sarbananda Union of Sundarganj Upazila in the district began on Saturday, bringing much festivity to the locals. Local lawmaker Mazedur Rahman formally inaugurated the work as the chief guest, with UNO Effat Jahan Tuli in attendance as the special guest.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, lawmaker Mazedur Rahman addressed the gathering, highlighting that the canal had lost its navigability and biodiversity due to a lack of excavation work. This had resulted in the canal being filled with earth, raising concerns among the local populace. He expressed optimism that the re-excavation would restore the canal’s navigability and biodiversity, thereby aiding locals in boosting agricultural crop production on a larger scale.

The Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) is tasked with implementing the excavation work, which spans from Nazrul Pre-cadet Academy to Sarbananda Guchchha gram. An official from BADC indicated that the project involves the removal of a total of 30,000 cubic feet of earth from the canal.

The local community has expressed their gratitude to the government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for initiating the re-excavation work after a prolonged period. The event saw a large gathering of locals, guests, and journalists who were present to witness the commencement of this significant project.
