Proclamation of Independence Day tomorrow

DHAKA, April 9, 2017 (BSS) - Bangladesh is set to recall April 10 as part of revisiting the history as on this day in 1971 the nation saw installation of its first sovereign government with the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

The provisional government was formed on that day in exile which in its first ordinance declaring Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the president on the basis of the proclamation of independence made by him on March 26, 1971, just ahead of his arrest by the Pakistani junta.

In the absence of Bangabandhu, Vice President Syed Nazrul Islam was entrusted with the charge as Acting President while Tajuddin Ahmad was elected as the Prime Minister of the provisional government, dubbed as Mujibnagar Government.

The government, however, was sworn in on April 17, 1971 in a ceremony in liberated Baidyanathtala of in Meherpur, which later was renamed as Mujibnagar.

A day after the swearing in ceremony the portfolios of the government was distributed when M Mansur Ali was given the charge as minister for finance commerce and industry, AHM Quamaruzzaman was given the charge as minister for home, relief, rehabilitation and agriculture and Khondker Mushtaque Ahmed was made as the foreign minister.

Mushtaque, however, was virtually made dysfunctional in the subsequent months as his stance against the independence appeared clear to the government.

Ekatturer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, which waged a prolonged campaign for trial of the perpetrators of 1971 atrocities, will organise a discussion at Dhanmondi WVA auditorium at 4pm.

Liberation War veteran and Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed will join the function as the chief guest while author of the draft of the proclamation of Independence of Bangladesh Barrister M Amir-ul -Islam will join the function as the special guest.

With the successful leadership of the Mujibnagar government, the country achieved independence on December 16, 1971 in the ninth month bloody war of liberation.
