Dhaka: International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam announced today that a formal investigation has commenced into the alleged crimes committed by the Awami League as a political party. The Chief Prosecutor made this announcement while addressing reporters at the ICT premises, indicating that the investigation process regarding the Awami League's activities as a party and organization is actively underway.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, an investigation officer has already been appointed to oversee this probe. The Chief Prosecutor assured that the investigation agency would expedite their efforts to complete the inquiry and submit a report. He emphasized that upon acquiring the investigation report, necessary legal actions would be taken to address the party's alleged crimes.
When questioned about the possible repercussions if the Awami League's crimes are proven, the ICT Chief Prosecutor stated that the law provides clear guidelines on penalties for political parties. These could include banning the party, imposing sanctions, seizing assets, or issuing specific directives concerning its leaders and members.
He further elaborated that the investigation report must first be finalized, followed by the case proceeding to trial, where these matters would be meticulously examined. In response to inquiries about whether the probe would extend to other parties within the 14-party alliance, Tajul Islam clarified that the current investigation solely targets the Awami League as a party. However, if evidence suggests involvement by other parties, the investigation agency would take necessary actions.
