Dhaka: Police arrested three alleged kidnappers from the Pashchim Baniakhamar area of the city in the early hours of today in connection with the abduction of a university student. The arrested were identified as Ramzan Akan, 28, son of Habibur Rahman, resident at Bk Roy Road, Ferdaus, 30, son of Sheikh Omor Ali, resident at West Baniakhamar, and Moniruzzaman, 24, son of Amirul Islam, all hailing from Krisnanagar Charai area in the city.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the accused abducted Md Mustasim Billah, 24, a university student and outsourcing freelancer, on October 3. Billah, who resides in the Tutpara area of the district, was kidnapped by the suspects who demanded a ransom of Taka 5 lakh, threatening to kill him if their demands were not met, as stated by Assistant Commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) Khondokar Hossain Ahmad.
Billah's family managed to pay Tk 24,000 and 56 US dollars through a digital payment account. Despite receiving a partial payment, the abductors tortured Billah and recorded a video at gunpoint, threatening to release it on social media if the remaining ransom was not paid. Billah was released on Monday, according to police reports.
Acting on a tip-off and utilizing mobile tracking, police conducted a raid around 12:45 am and successfully arrested the three individuals. A case has been filed with Khulna Sadar Police Station.
