Dhaka: The fisheries and livestock Adviser Farida Akhter emphasized the necessity of maintaining affordable prices for Hilsa fish, voicing concerns over potential abnormal increases. Addressing a gathering at the Department of Fisheries, Akhter highlighted the importance of keeping Hilsa within the financial reach of the general populace.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the adviser pointed out that controlling the price of Hilsa or any other fish cannot be achieved merely through decrees. Instead, understanding the underlying causes of price hikes is crucial for effective intervention. Akhter stressed that the government is proactively engaged in efforts to collect and preserve Hilsa, implementing stringent measures to safeguard this valuable species.

She further elaborated on the government’s active campaigns against illegal fishing practices, including the seizure and destruction of banned nets. Punitive actions are also being taken against fishermen who contravene existing regulations. Akhter noted the challenges posed by siltation, altering the natural habitats and migration patterns of Hilsa, underscoring the need for serious consideration of these factors to support the species’ breeding and movement.

Prominent figures such as Bangladesh Competition Commission Member Md. Akhtaruzzaman Talukder and Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Tofazzel Hossain, along with other senior officials, were present during the discussion.
