Man Receives Life Imprisonment for 2016 Rape in Meherpur

Meherpur: A court here today sentenced a man to life term imprisonment in a rape case that took place in Gangni upazila of the district in 2016. Judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Md Tahidul Islam pronounced the verdict in the afternoon.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the court also fined the convict, Swapan Ali, son of Enamul Haque of Mohammadpur village in the upazila, Taka 2 lakh, or, in default, to suffer six more months in jail, said Public Prosecutor Saidur Razzak.



The prosecution detailed that Swapan Ali developed a relationship with a ninth-grade madrasa student over mobile phone. On September 21, 2016, he called the girl to Akubpur village in Gangni upazila and raped her by luring her with a promise of marriage, and later fled away.



The victim’s father later filed a case with Gangni Police Station. Following investigation, Kumaridanga Police Camp In-Charge Sub-Inspector (SI) Mintu Mia submitted the charge sheet to the court. After examining the case documents and the testimonies of the witnesses, the court delivered the verdict.
