Chattogram: Authorities today seized 534 grams of gold worth Tk 1.176 crore from the luggage of a passenger arriving from Muscat at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram. The detained passenger was identified as Mohammad Hasan Murad, a resident of Nasirnagar area under Raozan upazila of Chattogram.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mohammad Hasan Murad arrived at the airport on a SalamAir flight (OV-401) from Muscat at around 8:30 am. Airport Public Relations Officer Engineer Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil confirmed the seizure, noting that a joint team comprising officials from the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), National Security Intelligence (NSI), and Customs Intelligence conducted a search of the passenger's luggage. The search was prompted by the passenger's suspicious movements while leaving the customs hall.
The search led to the recovery of 106 grams of gold jewellery, 425 grams of gold bars/ingots, and three grams of gold paste. The total market value of the seized gold was assessed at Tk 11,760,000. The seized gold has been handed over to Airport Customs for further legal action.
Meanwhile, Customs Intelligence is preparing to file a case against the detained passenger in connection with the seizure.
