Dhaka: Home Adviser Lt. Gen. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.) today announced that the prices of essential commodities are lower this Ramadan compared to the previous year.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury emphasized the importance of acknowledging the lower prices, stating, “The price of commodities is comparatively lesser than the previous year. You (journalists) have to say it. It is better to keep the price of the goods lower without conducting any drive against the syndicate.” These remarks were made during his interaction with journalists following an inspection of the Public Order Management office in Mirpur.
The home adviser urged businessmen to refrain from increasing the prices of essential goods during the holy month of Ramadan. He highlighted practices in other countries, where prices tend to decline during religious festivals, contrasting it with the local trend of price hikes during such times. He appealed to stakeholders to ensure price reductions wherever feasible during Ramadan.
Addressing a query regarding the recent assault on two women, the home adviser explained that the incident occurred following a disagreement when the women threw tea on individuals who were protesting against their public smoking. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury also urged everyone to respect the sanctity of Ramadan by avoiding eating in public places.
