Dhaka: Lawmakers today emphasized that the present government is committed to genuine development for the people, contrasting it with the actions of the previous government, which they accused of corruption under the guise of development.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the current administration, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, aims to implement development activities that truly benefit the populace. Rahman, who has recently returned to the country with his strategic plans, is focusing on initiatives that promise tangible improvements in the lives of citizens.

In stark contrast, lawmakers criticized the former government for allegedly embezzling vast sums of money in the name of development, thereby marginalizing the common people. These remarks were made during a discussion on the thank-giving motion on the President’s address in parliament. The session, which is the first of the 13th parliament, commenced on March 12 with an address by President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

The Business Advisory Committee has allocated 50 hours for discussions on the President’s speech. Chief Whip Md Nurul Islam introduced the motion of thanks, which was supported by Whip Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Apu. During the discussions, Khondoker Mohammad Abu Ashfaque, representing Dhaka-1, highlighted Prime Minister Rahman’s plan to distribute family cards, noting that 37,000 such cards have already been issued, with intentions to expand the program nationwide.

Additionally, allowances have been provided for Imams, and plans are in place to distribute ‘farmer cards’ starting next month. Sayeed Al Noman, a lawmaker from Chattogram-10, mentioned that the region, declared as the commercial capital by former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, now has an opportunity for realization under Rahman’s leadership.

In a tribute to the sacrifices made by party activists and the July warriors over the past 17 years, Noman acknowledged their role in the emergence of a new Bangladesh and offered prayers for their eternal peace. The discussion also saw contributions from National Citizen Party lawmaker Abdul Hannan Masud of Noakhali-6, as well as ruling BNP lawmakers M Abdul Aziz of Natore-4 and Sylhet-3 lawmaker M Abdul Maleque.
