Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today reiterated that the polls would be held sometime between December this year and June next year. “We want the next polls to be the most free, fair and acceptable one in the history of Bangladesh,” he said while addressing the nation this evening to convey greetings on the occasion of the Independence Day and the holy Eid-ul-Fitr.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Chief Adviser emphasized the interim government’s commitment to conducting the most free, fair, and acceptable election in the country’s history. He revealed that the Election Commission (EC) has begun comprehensive preparations and expressed hope that political parties would enthusiastically prepare to participate in the upcoming elections.
Prof Yunus mentioned that the National Consensus Commission has initiated its work, sending letters to 38 political parties with 166 recommendations and full reports from six reform commissions previously established by the interim government. Meanwhile, the government has commenced discussions with political parties regarding reforms, with parties responding positively and providing feedback on the proposals.
Prof Yunus highlighted the ongoing process of gathering opinions from all political parties through the Consensus Commission. The commission aims to identify mutual agreements among parties and compile a list of agreed-upon issues. The July Charter will be crafted based on these consensus issues.
He assured the nation of a transparent process, stating, “Our responsibility is to present the entire process before the nation in a transparent way and organize the elections after completing the process.” At the beginning of his speech, the Chief Adviser paid tribute to the heroic martyrs of the great Liberation War on the eve of the Independence Day.
