Dhaka: Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury announced that the Pahela Baishakh procession will now be called ‘Baishakhi Shobhajatra’, replacing the previous names ‘Mangal’ or ‘Ananda’ Shobhajatra. The decision aims to resolve ongoing debates and invigorate celebrations with renewed enthusiasm.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister revealed this change after a meeting at the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. He emphasized the need to end discussions and criticisms that have surrounded Pahela Baishakh, which he noted as potentially harmful to society. The government’s decision intends to eliminate these controversies.

Preparations for the procession are ongoing at Dhaka University’s Fine Arts faculty, where the event will commence. The minister highlighted the cultural and historical significance of Pahela Baishakh, rooted in Bengal’s agrarian traditions and celebrated by various communities, including ethnic groups like Chakma, Marma, Tripura, and Garo. The government aims to promote unity through this festival.

The announcement was made in the presence of key officials, including the DU Vice-Chancellor and directors of several cultural institutions. The minister reiterated that Pahela Baishakh symbolizes joy and prosperity, emphasizing the importance of beginning the New Year with hope and reconciliation.

Cultural programs will be organized across the capital, with venues like Ramna Batamul hosting events. The government has coordinated with necessary organizations to ensure readiness for the celebrations. UNESCO will be notified about the new name for the procession.

Security measures will be stringent, with law enforcement agencies on alert to prevent any incidents during the festivities. Meanwhile, Dhaka University announced the procession will start at 9:00 am from the Faculty of Fine Arts, following a route through Raju Sculpture, Doel Chattar, and Bangla Academy before returning to its origin.
