DHAKA: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus announced today that more than 1.26 crore individuals are currently benefiting from the social safety net programme, with allowances being distributed efficiently through digital platforms.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Professor Yunus emphasized that the integration of information technology has significantly enhanced the programme’s reach and efficiency. The government-to-person (G2P) system facilitates the direct transfer of allowances through mobile financial services and banks, ensuring that 1,26,39,866 people receive the necessary support. This announcement coincides with the upcoming National Social Service Day-2025, which will be observed tomorrow.

The total allocation for the social safety net programme in the 2024-25 fiscal year amounts to Taka 10,559.94 crore. Professor Yunus highlighted the Ministry of Social Welfare and the Department of Social Services’ efforts in executing 54 public welfare programmes with limited resources. These programmes offer medical care and assistance to millions annually, including students and individuals injured in the July Revolution.

The Department of Social Services is committed to improving the lives of the country’s most vulnerable populations, including the poverty-stricken, elderly, disadvantaged children, adolescents, widows, victims of domestic violence, critically ill patients, and marginalized communities. The successful implementation of these social safety net programmes underscores the department’s dedication to social welfare and development.

Professor Yunus also pointed out the significance of this year’s National Social Service Day theme, “Those who have no one by their sides, have social service (Nei Pashe Kew Jar, Somaj Seba Ache Tar),” as being both relevant and timely. He expressed his best wishes for the success of all initiatives planned for the occasion.
