Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today emphasized the importance of democracy and the rule of law for the safety of all citizens in the country. He asserted that the absence of these elements leaves everyone-women, men, minorities, and majorities-vulnerable. Rahman made these remarks while addressing a victory rally at the BNP’s central office in Nayapaltan.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the BNP organized the victory rally to commemorate the anniversary of the fall of Awami fascism and the victory of students and the people on August 5, 2024. Tarique Rahman highlighted the need for the proper application and practice of democratic political rights, which he noted were secured through the sacrifices of countless martyrs. He criticized the persecution and oppression carried out by the Awami League, describing the period of its rule as a time when people’s voting rights and democratic freedoms were stripped away, turning Bangladesh into a “barbaric prison and Aynaghar (house of mirrors).”

Rahman urged the populace to remain united for the national interest, acknowledging that while differences of opinion are natural, they should be resolved through discussion. He emphasized that religion, philosophy, and personal opinions are private matters, whereas the state is a collective entity belonging to everyone.

He called on citizens to be vigilant about their rights, urging them to take action to secure their own rights and ensure the safety of their families and future generations. Rahman also outlined the BNP’s commitment to the welfare of the people through a 31-point plan, should the party be given the mandate to govern.

In conclusion, Tarique Rahman expressed his hopes for the success of the victory rally, reiterating the BNP’s need for public support and cooperation to implement its programs for the betterment of the country.
