Dhaka: The National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO) provided legal services to 4,465 cases of labourers across the country from 2009 to July this year, official sources said here today.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a report published on the website of the organization states that it has realized compensation worth about Taka 6,69,26,215 from different factory owners for the labourers so far.
The legal assistance cells in Dhaka and Chattogram have provided 21,682 legal suggestions to the labourers. The organization has settled 815 cases out of 4,465 during this period. It also initiated 3,301 cases to be resolved through the alternative dispute resolution (ADR) method, of which a total of 1,914 cases have already been resolved through ADR. The total number of beneficiaries from Dhaka and Chattogram legal assistance cells is 29,448.
The National Legal Aid Services Organization has been offering legal assistance to financially insolvent and marginalized poor people without any expenses. The services were initially introduced for the poor and insolvent people at district levels. Later, they were extended to the Supreme Court through a toll-free number (16430), a call centre, and two specialized cells in Dhaka and Chattogram.
The NLASO has been providing these services under the direct supervision of the Law and Justice Division of the Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry.
