Nine get death sentence for killing brothers in Meherpur

A court here today sentenced nine people to death sentence for murdering two brothers at frontier Kazipur village under Gangni Upazila of the district in 2012.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Ripati Kumar Biswas handed down the verdict to Abdul Halim, Atiar Rahman, Jalal Uddin, Shariful Islam, Sharif Hossain, Dobir Uddin, his son Farid Hossain, Azizul Haque and Monirul Islam Moni. All of them were the residents in Kazipur area.

According to the prosecution at night on June 15 in 2012, the convicts called one Abujel, 35, and his brother Rafiqul Islam, 40, through mobile phone and killed them brutally in a crop's field at the village over phensidyl smuggling.

Following the murder, the victim's sister Jorina Begum filed a case with Gangni Thana. Later, police pressed the charge sheet.

Testifying witnesses and evidences, the court gave the order. The court acquitted five people in the verdict, said Additional Public Prosecutor Kazi Shahidul Haque.

The court also fined each of the convict Taka 20,000. If they are failed to pay they will serve six months more in jail.
