CHITTAGONG, Jan 31, 2017 (BSS) - Journalists in the mainstream print and electronic media today stood by the Daily Observer editor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury staging a street protest in the port city here as a lawmaker lodged a defamation suit against accusing him of tainting his image.
A huge number of newsmen working for mainstream print and electronic media rallied in front of the Chittagong Press Club and denounced the lawmaker, calling his move as an attempt to upset the freedom of the press while the government was determined to uphold it.
Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) President Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul and Secretary General Omar Faruq joined the protest rally which demanded immediate withdrawal of the case filed by Nizam Uddin Hazari MP of Feni against Chowdhury, who is also prime minister's media affairs adviser.
Chittagong Union of Journalists (CUJ) President Reaz Haidar Chowdhury presided over the rally while BFUJ Vice President Shahidul Alam, Chittagong Press Club (CPC) president Kalim Sarwar and general secretary Shuklal Das, President of TV Journalists Association in Chittagong Ali Abbas, CUJ general secretary Muhammad Ali, former CUJ Presidents Mostaq Ahmed, Anjan Kumar Sen and senior CUJ leader Samir Kanti Barua among others addressed it.
Hazari yesterday filed a TK 10 crore defamation case against Chowdhury for publishing a report claiming it "tarnished his image".
