Dhaka: The government has taken a decisive step by establishing a six-member committee aimed at ensuring that lethal weapons are no longer distributed to ordinary police personnel. This committee is spearheaded by Md. Khuda Baksh Chowdhury, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser on the Ministry of Home Affairs.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Home Ministry issued a press release stating that the committee’s primary objective is to ensure that only trained and responsible members of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) are equipped with lethal weapons. The move underscores a strategic shift in the arming of law enforcement personnel, focusing on the specialized training and accountability of the APBn.

In addition to this initiative, the government has also set up a seven-member committee led by Lt Gen (retd) Abdul Hafiz. This committee’s mandate is to scrutinize the structural, administrative, and operational facets of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), with the goal of recommending necessary reforms or restructuring to enhance its effectiveness.

Further efforts include the formation of a five-member committee, again convened by Md. Khuda Baksh Chowdhury, tasked with drafting regulations to monitor and control overseas travel. This development follows a broader agenda to refine the operational protocols within various governmental sectors.

Moreover, three additional committees have been assigned to enhance intelligence surveillance across the nation. Their mission is to bolster the capabilities of law enforcement agencies, thereby contributing to the maintenance of law and order throughout the country.

The recent meeting, overseen by Home Adviser Lt Gel Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd), highlights a concerted effort by the government to reassess and strengthen the country’s law enforcement strategies.
