Dhaka: National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has called on the interim government to unveil a comprehensive roadmap addressing three critical areas: the trial of mass killings during the previous year’s July-August Uprising, overall reform processes, and the scheduling of the next national election. “The roadmaps for justice, reform, and elections should be announced together. That will create a sense of reassurance among the public and foster trust among all political parties,” Nahid Islam stated at a press conference held at the NCP office in Banglamotor.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Nahid emphasized the expectation of a peaceful transfer of power through justice, reform, and fair elections. He stated that it is the interim government’s responsibility not only to conduct elections but also to ensure justice and implement fundamental reforms. Nahid further urged Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus to remain in charge and work towards resolving issues through political discussions with all parties.
The NCP also made an appeal to all political entities to act responsibly for the country’s current situation, national security, and future democratic state. Nahid highlighted the importance of resolving issues through discussion. He also commented on the approaching deadline for the July Charter, stressing the necessity of its announcement within the stipulated timeframe.
Nahid noted that the government’s legitimacy and responsibilities stem from the aspirations of the July Uprising. He recalled that Dr. Muhammad Yunus assumed power following a mass movement, with the expectation that the government would fulfill public demands for justice, reform, and a peaceful transfer of power through free and fair elections.
Nahid further stated that the government is obligated not only to hold elections but also to address past crimes, such as the July massacre, and to implement necessary structural reforms. He critiqued efforts to legitimize past controversial votes through the judiciary, reiterating opposition parties’ rejection of elections held under the previous Awami League government. Nahid warned that seeking court validation would only lead to further instability and suggested focusing on local government elections to alleviate public suffering and restore democratic trust.
Regarding student advisers, Nahid clarified that the party has no relation with the two advisers of the interim government, Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan and Mahfuj Alam, noting their roles in last year’s Mass Uprising. Nahid explained that if these advisers wish to engage in politics or participate in elections, they must leave the government to make independent decisions.
He concluded by addressing attempts to associate the two advisers with the NCP through propaganda, which he claimed were intended to demean them. NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, Senior Joint Convener Ariful Islam Adeeb and Samanta Sharmin, Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari, and Chief Organiser (Southern Region) Hasnat Abdullah, among others, were also present at the press conference.
