Dhaka: Independent lawmaker Rumeen Farhana has called on the government to mandate that members of parliament (MPs) send their children to study at educational institutions within their respective constituencies. She made this statement on Thursday during a dialogue titled ‘Government Priorities and the Education Sector: Budget and Reality’, organized by Citizen’s Platform for SDGs, Bangladesh at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Agargaon.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Rumeen Farhana emphasized that if MPs cannot ensure their children attend local schools, they should at least enroll them in the district schools. As the MP of Sarail, she declared her commitment to this initiative by stating that her own children must study at the Zilla school in Sarail. Furthermore, she underscored the importance of MPs receiving medical treatment at local hospitals, pledging to uphold her campaign promise of seeking medical attention within her local area.
Rumeen Farhana argued that if such measures were made mandatory, it could potentially deter certain candidates, particularly loan defaulters, from participating in elections. She also addressed the need for improving teachers’ salary structures, suggesting that providing better wages could attract more qualified educators to the profession. Additionally, she highlighted the urgency for the Bangladeshi government to increase funding in the education and health sectors to meet the country’s developmental needs.
